Joe McElderry: Where it all went tits up?

Now, you know that I’m not one to ram my opinions down your throat but Joe McElderry is brilliant and that’s just a fact. Talented and quite the charmer it upsets me that his career is basically over before it’s even begun and his record label and management have no one to blame but themselves.

The album itself is alright and after coming out as ‘a bumder’ critics drew comparisons with Alphabeat (Amazing), Scissor Sisters (Amazing) and Mika (Amazing when he’s not being a prick). Now, we the X Factor viewer, saw Joe sing live for twelve weeks impeccably well and generally being a lovely person. So his record label, presumably with the combined brain power of Kerry Katona and a potato, decided to auto-tune the fuck out of his angelic voice and make an album so void of personality it makes Ellie Goulding look like Amy Winehouse.

When it’s good, however, it is rather special. Debut single Ambitions, a cover of Danish band Donkeyboy, is great shiny pop but a bad choice of debut single when you hear the anthemic chorus of Someone Wake Me Up.

NOT A DEBUT SINGLE, maybe third or fourth so he could perform it acoustically on Daybreak to promote a UK tour maybe.

MASSIVE NOT BALLED (Check) EUPHORIC CHORUS (Check) POSSIBLITY OF X FACTOR PERFORMANCE WITH CHOIR (Check).

The rest of the album is pleasant but unspectacular. A cover of Real Late Starter by Nerina Pallot, good song, is alright but too polished and robotic to match the original and the rest all blurs into vocodered white noise.

Feel The Fire is the best track by miles though. Catchy, FUN and well it’s basically Facination by Alphabeat which is good.

So. What should he do next? Well with the official party line from Syco being: “we’ll give him another album” this is what they need to do. Keep Biff Stannard (responsible for Feel The Fire) for writing and producing, maybe give Nerina a call for some songs that sound like Better Than Today and give him a drastic style overhaul so he looks like James Dean. Oh and ditch the auto-tune.

How true.Young Joe McElderry became a pawn in a game of greed and power. Ashley Tabor ensured that his songs were deprived of air play on ALL the radio stations he controls. This gave The Wanted and others as much airplay as was requiredto make the top ten. What a corrupt industry, full of despicable people!
